GIRL Date: Iron Sharpens Iron Kyla Woods

I first met Kyla while I was on my second tour in South Korea. The first time I saw her I didn’t actually even speak to her.  I was just soaking up her presence. She stands tall and exudes an unmatched confidence. Pure beauty.  When our paths finally crossed again some months later on a cruise in Seoul, there was no way she was ever getting away from me. We would remain close friends for the next few years, meet each other’s families, spend hours of talk therapy.  She helped me through a tough divorce while reaching the 30 year crisis, and now I have the privilege of adding her to GIRL date so you can see how great she is as well.

Kyla is an Air Force Master Sergeant that is unapologetic, bossy, and beautiful. She has a passion for lipstick (if yall dont believe me check every picture in this post!), the gym, mentoring, and can make a MEAN potato salad! She is a wife and mother of a future star ball player.  Kyla is also a superstar consultant with Scentsy Inc. (better than your candles) and hopes to pursue her love for marketing once she retires from the service.

What advice would you give your 20 year old self?

Number one…don’t get that lower back tattoo! Your 20’s are for you so be selfish, don’t rush, and slow down. I’d marry my husband all over again, and we’ve been able to grow together but…WAIT!

What does women empowerment mean to you?

Compliments! I’ll never have to unscrew another woman’s lightbulb…we can all win. Iron sharpens iron.

If I didn’t have (…) I would go insane.

Perfume. Your perfume is your essence.

Kyla’s morning routine

Me time. I start at the gym while listening to music. I spend time with my son making sure he’s good to go and then I’m off to be MSgt Kyla

If you had to leave this earth tomorrow what is the one thing you would do?

I would touch those near and dear to me and then go have a lot of sex!

What do you love most about yourself?

I’d have to say my confidence. When I talk people listen (Note from Charlotte: I will vouch for this statement. Take notes. This is bossy)

What is a day of self-care for Kyla?

Most definitely a day at the spa…

What are the challenges you’ve encountered being a woman in the workplace?

Mostly being a double minority (Black Woman). There is an “attitude” stigma that comes with being a strong black woman in the workplace. “I have to water down my south side Chicago” Advice: Pick your battles and find balance. Make sure you keep your delivery professional and stay one step ahead.

What do you say to someone who wants to quit?

“Why did you start?” Answer that question, revisit, and be prepared to deal with that.

What does LOVE mean to you?

Loving me for who I am and not what you want me to be. “Are you with me or not?”
